Dogs suffer from many diseases similar to ours. For example, celiac disease. Yes, as you hear, dogs can be gluten intolerant. But today there are already various free foods that they can eat. However, this is not so much the case with sweets, for example.

This anomaly in dogs is still something new, so it will not be easy, at least for the first months, to find everything we are looking for without gluten for our pet. This cannot stop us from indulging the dog with a treat. The problem is that almost all of them have corn or wheat, which is the cause of damage to a celiac animal.

Many owners do not even realize that their dog is celiac. And this is an unknown disease in the canine field. However, it is a reality. Thus, those who have a pet should be very attentive to the symptoms that their furry could present due to this.

Gluten is a protein found in many grains, such as wheat, corn, oats, barley, or rye. Many foods are made with flours from these cereals. Therefore the market is greatly reduced.

Many people have an organism intolerant to this protein. And today there are also many dogs that have it. Competition in the market has led to the rapid launch of gluten-free feed. But it seems they are still working on the treats, or many factories may have forgotten.

Gluten symptoms

The symptoms that a gluten intolerant dog could present are the following:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea. The main irritation caused by gluten arises in the intestine, so this will cause vomiting and diarrhea in the animal. This is not to say that a dog that has diarrhea or vomits a few times already has to be gluten intolerant. But if it happens repeatedly, it may be. Taking him to the vet is the best option.
  • Itchiness. If you see that your dog is scratching his skin or anus too much, he may have a gluten allergy as this causes skin irritation.
  • Difficulty breathing. This allergy can also cause irritation to the nasal passages and throat, making it difficult to breathe and causing inflammation, sneezing and itching.
  • Convulsions. This is a serious allergy alert, so as soon as you see what happens to your dog, do not hesitate and take him to the vet urgently.

As we have said, there are hundreds of gluten-free dog foods on the market, although it seems that there is not much to choose from with the treats. However, there are specific brands that have dedicated themselves fully to it and you can even get the packages at a reasonable price online.

However, if this task is difficult for you where you live, you can always make your own gluten-free treats for your dog. Check out this simple recipe:

    • One and a half cups of rice
    • 1 grated potato
    • A grated carrot
    • 1 stick of celery, chopped
    • 3 quarts of a kilo of minced meat
    • 4 eggs
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 3/4 of Cup of quinoa

You just have to cook the rice with the potato and grate it and mix with the rest of the ingredients. Drizzle with olive oil and bake 45 minutes at 175 degrees Celsius.

When it cools down, we will make balls of the size we want and we can store some in the fridge and freeze the rest for later use. Your dog will love them!
