The Abandonment Of Pets Is An Evil That Is Impossible To Eradicate

The abandonment of pets is an evil that is impossible to eradicate

Laws against animal abuse are becoming tougher in many countries, such as Spain. However, the figures seem to indicate that this hardening is not helping much when it comes to pet abandonment.

Creepy figures

In Spain it is speculated that at least 300,000 animals are abandoned each year. This figure is shocking, especially considering the new laws that condemn the abandonment of pets and animal abuse.

No matter how hard people have tried to reduce this figure, not only in Spain, but also in other countries, it seems that it is always increasing.

There are many demonstrations, the shelters that try to take care of them, the protectors who look for a home for them, the NGOs that fight against abuse … And what has been achieved? Individually, the good work of those who love animals has managed to give new life to some animals, but as a group, there are still many abandonments, too many.

The causes of abandonment of animals are various, however, all of them can be prevented using common sense.

Causes of abandonment of pets and animals

The abandonment of pets and animals is a common evil that happens all over the world and that is caused by the same circumstances regardless of the country in which it occurs. We list them:

  • Ignorance of responsibility. Many who want to adopt a dog do so thinking that it is a beautiful, furry living being to play with and pet. And it’s true, but it encompasses much more than that. When they realize that they must give him veterinary attention, put up with his puppy antics, his little things around the house and take him out at least twice a day, they no longer like their “stuffed animal”.
  • Holiday. Many who have a dog do not understand the enormous responsibility that this encompasses. They do not understand that they cannot leave the animals alone if they have to go on a trip, and that they will have to pay to leave it somewhere or take it with them. Since they don’t like any of the options, they prefer to leave it in a kennel or shelter.
  • Loss of beauty. We are all dazzled to see some beautiful puppies and they seem angelic. However, when puppies grow up they can lose a little bit of their beauty, just like a baby that becomes a child. Although that’s not an excuse to reject it, right? Even so, many do it by increasing that huge dropout figure.
  • Disease. There is nothing more cruel than abandoning a sick being. Different in the case of animals? It should not be, however many do not give importance to the fact of abandoning their pets because they are sick.

There are many things we can do to prevent abandonment. Even when it has been stipulated as an evil that cannot be eradicated, those who love animals do not lose hope of ending this evil that affects so many animals.

    How to avoid abandoning pets

To avoid abandonment, everyone must be aware of the responsibility of owning an animal. So if you decide to adopt one, keep in mind that:

    • It will entail expenses for food, veterinary, health and some basic necessities products such as shampoo, towel, bed and others.
    • You will have to spend time with him. If you work twelve hours a day, it would not be wise to adopt a pet, at least not a dog. Maybe a turtle.
    • You should take it out for a walk. It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold, if you’re tired or not. Your dog will have to go outside at least twice a day and will have to run and exercise to stay healthy and strong.
    • You will have to put up with their antics. When they are small, as happens with children, it is possible that things damage you and that their little things get done everywhere. If you want a puppy, it is a risk that you must take. And whether at home or on the street, you will have to pick up their poop, always!

If everyone were aware of these points, using common sense there would be fewer pet adoptions but also fewer dropouts. Hopefully one day that will be so.
