The Arabian horse, history and characteristics

History and origin

Apparently this is one of the oldest breeds. Archaeological finds dating from 4500 years ago have been found. Although the characteristics are not exactly the same, the similarities have led to believe that they belong to this breed.

This type of horse developed in the deserts of the East. Later, it was expanded by the arrival of trade and wars. His skills, such as speed, grace, endurance, and bone strength, were soon valued by many. So during its expansion the Arabian horse was used to improve other breeds. That is why all modern breeds of horses today have characteristics of this.

In the beginning they were very well cared for by the nomads of the area. They even put them in their stores to protect and care for them. This made the Arabian horse, from the beginning, create a special connection with humans that helped its willingness to obey, learn and please.

However, this horse was also used in warfare due to its strength and other abilities, such as alertness, which made it perfect for this task. This caused that over the years, the owners of an Arabian horse must learn to treat it with respect and specific skills.

Characteristics of the Arabian horse

Head

Its head is wedged but very fine and elegant, with a large forehead, as are its eyes. It has the characteristic of having very wide and open nostrils, while its snout is small.

Body

Their back loins elongate their rear, which ends in a long and dense tail that rises upwards and then falls like a waterfall over it.

His bones are heavy and strong, which makes him have large and powerful extremities.

Size

According to the American Equestrian Federation, the breed standard ranges from 143.3 to 153.4 centimeters in height. However, others a little shorter or a little taller have been accepted as thoroughbreds.

In Europe and America this size seemed not to be enough. Thus, there was a time when they mixed the Arabian horse to obtain equines with measurements between 152.4 and 162.6.

The closeness to people that the Arabian horse had since the beginning of history has made this breed extremely docile and easy to train. So much so that, for example, in the United States, this breed is used for sports competitions for those under 18 years of age.

The intelligence of this animal, together with its sensitivity and ease of being with humans, have made it a fast learning horse and with which it is very easy to communicate.

However, these same qualities are what make them need to be treated with respect, without harshness, because they learn bad habits as quickly as they discover good ones. So if you see abusive gestures or inexperienced riders treating you rudely, you could rebel.
