Group 8 dogs: breed classification according to the FCI

The International Cynological Federation is in charge of determining the standards of each canine breed and classifies them according to their characteristics. In this article we will tell you which are the dogs in group 8 that include game collectors, game and water lifters.

Group 8 dogs: hunting catchers

In English Retriever, this section of dogs is characterized by animals that retrieve prey for the hunter. They were created to stay under control, mark the downed dam, make “blind” charges and, of course, follow the owner’s orders. Among the 6 breeds of game collectors are:

1. Labrador Retriever

It is one of the most popular pets in the world and has its origins in Canada. As for his behavior, he stands out for his intelligence, his kindness, his energy, his affability and his gentleness. They are excellent companions, they get along perfectly with children, obedient to the maximum and very friendly. Labrador Retrievers can have black, chocolate or sand coats. They usually suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia due to obesity (something very common in this breed).

2. Straight Hair Retriever

The Flat Coated Retriever comes from the United Kingdom and the first specimens were born in the 19th century. Their ancestors are believed to have come from Canada. Although the breed was on the verge of disappearing in World War II, in the 1960s it gained popularity due to dog sports and mountain expeditions. He is somewhat confident, likes to please his owners, makes an excellent companion, and has a firm bark. He has black, dense and shiny hair.

Group 8 dogs: hunting lifters

All the dogs that are included in this section are medium or small in size and have large, hanging ears. The main use is to assist in the hunting of birds: first they look for them and then they deliver them to the hunter. In total there are 9 breeds of hunting lifters, among which the following stand out:

1. English Cocker Spaniel

Originally from Wales to chase redfish, the English Cocker Spaniel has its ancestors in Spain and its descendants in the United States. He is athletic, strong, with a compact body, a developed chest and muscular hind legs. The ears are lobular and fall to the level of the eyes.

The coat can be one or more colors, such as brown (light), white, black, etc. He is a very intelligent, resistant, alert dog and does not like to be alone at all. Barks a lot when unaccompanied. It is ideal for living in a city apartment.

2. Welsh Springer Spaniel

Another UK dog within Group 8, it has an almost square body, with a long tail, brown eyes, and slightly furry ears. It weighs up to 20 kg and the hair is soft to the touch in red and white. He is very faithful, affectionate, active and somewhat reserved with strangers. It can be somewhat “sticky” with owners and is characterized by being “deaf to orders” if not properly trained.

Group 8 dogs: water

Within this section there are 8 breeds, with woolly and curly hair and which are used especially for marine areas. Among them we highlight:

1. Poodle

Although it is also in group 9 of the International Cynological Federation for being a companion pet, the Poodle has physical characteristics that fit perfectly with that of the water collectors. It emerged in the 15th century and at first it was an animal only for nobles and aristocrats.

Until the Renaissance it was used to retrieve ducks and swans. There are four varieties according to their size (Large, Medium, Dwarf and Toy), they are very active, playful and cheerful and are not easily distracted.

2. Spanish water dog

He was born in Andalusia and, while he was used as a shepherd and as a ship’s helper, he was determined to occupy a place among water collectors because of his appearance. The coat can be black, brown, white or beige, one or two colors. It is a faithful, cheerful, obedient, courageous, industrious and balanced dog, with instincts for hunting, guarding and protection.
