What is non-elastic skin syndrome?

This is an inherited disease caused by a defective development of collagen. This is the main component to obtain elasticity in the skin. Due to this, if it does not exist or is defective, when we pull the skin it does not return to its original place.

In addition, the lack of collagen in the skin makes it fragile and wounds very easily. This makes it difficult for the animal to apply to other dogs, since games between them could cause harm.

On the other hand, wound healing is accelerated. Although the scars they leave are ugly white and bleeding. In addition to this, the hair of dogs with non-elastic skin syndrome is finer, drier and more brittle.

Other consequences

The deformation of collagen in the animal’s skin can damage other organs or parts of the body. For example, it increases the laxity of the joints. For this reason, these can suffer alterations that in the long run will bring greater problems.

Cases have also been known in which alterations can be seen in the eyes, for example in the cornea and lens, although not all of them have the same medical condition.

How to improve it

Being a hereditary disease, there is no cure. But according to doctors, they say that it can improve by supplying the animal with vitamin C and taking preventive measures.

These measures consist of avoiding slightly more “aggressive” games with other animals, and if they suffer injuries, treat them as soon as possible to avoid infections.

These are the most common diseases that we can observe in the skin of dogs:

• Flea bite allergy. This is one of the most frequent and it can happen very easily. Fleas are everywhere and produce an almost unbearable itchy sensation. The dog will scratch desperately and you will redden the area even more, making the situation worse.

• Fungi. Animals are not exempt from skin fungus. These, in addition to giving an ugly appearance to the skin, are contagious, so you should treat it as soon as possible and touch your animal with gloves until the problem has been solved.
• Sarna. This is caused by a mite that lives under the skin and lays eggs everywhere, from which other expensive ones hatch that begin to do the same. It will cause hair loss and a horrible itch that will not be relieved by scratching.
• Food allergy. A change in the animal’s skin can be caused by allergies to certain foods. Although we may not give it due importance, allergies can cause more serious problems in dogs. Go to the vet at any sign that this may have happened.
• Pyoderma. This is caused by bacteria that create pus and is the most common in dogs. This bacteria is housed in the anus, nostrils, or face of the animal. The symptoms are visible, so treating it in time will not be a problem. These are: breakouts on the skin, itching, scabs and weight loss among others.
